I realize her downhill went pretty fast. Her back legs were getting weak and sometimes give out. She started not getting up fast enough to get out to go potty. But the next day she would be like a puppy and play and everything was great. Thats how it should have ended for her.

Labrador puppy weak hind legs. Dog’s back legs weak? As with any canine health issue, having a copy of the dog’s medical history is invaluable for vets. Photo: veroturg. What can make a dog’s back legs weak, or cause a dog’s back legs to give out? That’s a question I had to answer recently for the anxious parents of a middle-aged Labrador Retreiver. Pippa Mattinson is the best selling author of The Happy Puppy Handbook, the Labrador Handbook, Choosing The Perfect Puppy, and Total Recall.. and the last couple days has been struggling to get his hind legs up to stand. This is such a hard decision..knowing when.. We raised his bowls as he was near falling with weak back end yesterday to. A veterinarian explains four possible causes of sudden weakness in your dog’s back legs, and what you must do. When your dog’s hind legs suddenly go weak, there could be any number of causes, says veterinarian Dr. Jules Benson, BVSc, and VP of Veterinary Services at Petplan pet insurance. A massage is effective therapy for your dog, whether it is young or old, active or passive. Like humans, dogs are subject to defective genes, muscle strain and age-related degeneration that may cause them to have weak rear legs. Additionally, dogs that suffer from arthritis and joint problems tend to have weak rear legs.

He's a yellow Labrador Retriever and he's 13 years old...not THAT old for his breed. Recently he has been stumbling around and losing his balance, especially on the stairs. His hind legs keep folding from under him, and he doesn't eat unless we sit next to him. Can ANYTHING be done to slow the process or heal his legs entirely or at least help him walk better?? Ever since we got her at 8 weeks old, I’ve noticed her backs legs or hips seem a bit weak. If she’s lying down, she pulls her upper body up with her front legs, but the back legs take a few seconds. I mostly notice this when she’s on a soft surface, like the couch. HOWEVER, she runs and jumps with no problems. My friend has a puppy that suddenly his hind legs are weak. He acts normal and still wants to play but, his legs are - Answered by a verified Dog Veterinarian. We use cookies to give you the best possible experience on our website. I have a 7 or 8 week old pitbull/boxer puppy and he was wobbly in his hind legs and kind of staggering. Now his right leg is really weak and he falls over when he tries to walk or go to the bathroom he doesn’t seem to be in pain. We took him to the vet and they did exrays and examined him but said everything looked normal.

Hi All, Need some help with my pup's hind legs, when we first got him I noticed his back legs seemed very 'weak' and he seemed to walk funnily, I was scared about HD and contacted the person we got him from and he told us it is a problem caused because when the puppy was born he was kept inside on mainly uncarpeted floor so when he first started walking he slipped a lot which resulted in his. Puppy development stages don’t stop after you bring your puppy home at 8 weeks. Puppies have a lot of growing to do in the first 8 weeks of their life, and for many months after. Different breeds mature at different rates. So a large dog like a Labrador won’t develop at the same speed as a small breed like a Yorkshire Terrier. A wide range of chronic conditions can leave dogs weak or lethargic. That includes heart problems, liver problems, diabetes, and hypoglycemia. Heart disease. Lethargy and reduced tolerance for exercise are the early signs of congestive heart failure in dogs. As the condition worsens, other symptoms develop, including loss of appetite, coughing. Your puppy may be hungry, painful, uncomfortable, or nervous. Wobbly back legs may be caused by being tired, or weak, or having a problem with the knees or hips. It would probably be best to have your puppy checked out by a veterinarian, as they can examine him or her, and see if there is a problem or if everything is normal.

I'm heart broken. My labrador is about 13 years old. His hind legs started to become weak about a year ago. It wasn't bad. He was standing like a German Shephard. Sometime's he would hesitate before going up the stairs or jumping onto the bed. He had lost a lot of weight and the vet said that was good---less weight for his weak legs to hold. Both of my wiener dogs at different times were shaky and had weak hind legs. One of my dogs could not jump on the couch, could not climb stairs and would lay under the bed shaking.I thought maybe she had really bad arthritis or a bad back injury.I gave her calcium pills in wet cat food and she got better for a little while.so later I gave my dog. We have found that leash walking has been excellent for strengthening his hind area - he has rippling muscles of steel now. The walks are brisk (for the human) and last about 30-45 mins at least 5x week (other walks are off leash), and include a lot of uphill (we live on a mountain slope). A puppy with dysplasia may have trouble climbing stairs and difficulty rising after lying down. The front legs may appear well-muscled while the rear legs may lack proper muscular development. Akitas, German shepherds, Labrador retrievers, golden retrievers, Rottweilers and Newfoundlands are some breeds commonly affected.
